Marriage customs around the world are as varied and unique as the cultures themselves. In some cultures, brides wear crowns to deflect evil spirits. In others, couples bond over sake. And in still others, grooms carry their brides over thresholds to protect them from bad luck. No matter what the tradition, each one is a beautiful representation of the culture it comes from.

United States

Although Christian weddings in the Arab World bear similarities to Western weddings, Muslim weddings in the Arab world have many unique customs and traditions. One of the most interesting customs is the blackening of the bride. The bride and groom are covered in a black substance, which is said to ward off evil spirits. This custom is practiced to help the happy couple start their new life together free from bad luck.

Europe

For example, in Italy, it is common for the bride and groom to carry small trinkets to bring good luck. Grooms often wear the Barong Tagalog during the wedding, along with the male attendants.

 Another tradition is the Baraat, where the groom and his family are escorted to the wedding ceremony by horses. This is said to be a symbol of fertility and prosperity for the new couple. Lastly, in some cultures, the Mangal Phere (Circling the Sacred Fire) is completed. This is said to be a symbol of unity and strength for the marriage. All of these traditions are important in Asian cultures and help to make a marriage stronger.

Africa

The wedding is an exceptionally respected tradition within Africa due to their deeply rooted appreciation for the notion of family. Many African communities have rituals where the bride feeds the couple. There's also a formal request ceremony where the groom asks for the bride's hand in marriage from her father.

 In most African cultures, they expect the groom's family to pay a bride price. But, in Zulu culture, the wedding (or umabo) procedures are slightly different. If you want to marry an African, it's important to know about their culture and customs surrounding weddings.

As with most African tribes, it begins with the payment of “lobola”. This is a kind of bride price paid by the man to the family of the woman he wishes to marry. The amount varies depending on how much livestock the family owns. Once this has been paid, a date for the wedding is set and preparations begin in earnest.
